India - The Land
India has virtually every kind of landscape imaginable. This
makes India a great travel destination any time of year. In the
north you have the Himalayas, and other arid mountains. The
northern terrain also consist of deserts, lakes and forests.
Great winter travel opportunities abound here.
The west coast touches the Arabian Sea, and is lined with
some of India's best beaches. Great for those who want to dig
their toes in the sand and sip on a tall glass of lemon tea.
On the East, India extends beyond Bangladesh, into the Naga
Hills which borders Burma. Most of the country here is humid
with deltas flowing out to the Bay of Bengal.
The Indian Ocean is to the south. South India is also a
favorite tourist destination. Marina Beach, the second longest
beach in the world has golden sands, great surfs and
shimmering blue water!

India - Brief History
* India's history dates back more than five
thousand years, with its first major
civilisation along the Indus River valley.
* In 1500 B.C. the Aryans came from the
North and brought with them their culture
and religious beliefs.* 567 B.C. saw the rise
of Buddhism with the birth of Gautama
Buddha.
* During the 4th century B.C., Emperor
Ashoka, one of the greatest kings of India,
took over the country. He embraced
Buddhism and built what is now a world
heritage site, the group of monuments at
Sanchi.
* Christianity entered India with the visits of
St. Thomas the Aspostle around 52 A.D.
* The 15th century saw the coming of Guru
Nanak who laid the foundation of the Sikh
religion.
* In 1192, Mohammed of Ghori, from
Afghanistan, captured several cities in the
north including Delhi.
* Another conquerer named "Timur the
Lame" or "Tamberlane" came from Turkey
in 1398. * Next came the Mughals, who were
from Iran. They conquered most of the north
and built some of the fantastic structures
you see today around the New Delhi, Agra
and Jaipur cities. This includes the Red
Fort, Amber Fort and the famous Taj Mahal.
* In the south, the Hindu Vijayanagar empire
was flourishing until the 1600s, when the
Portuguese, French, Dutch, Dane and
British started visiting India. Some remnants
of their culture can still be seen today in
many of the towns and cities.
* India got its independence from Britain in
1947.
Ethnically Speaking Indians speak different languages, follow different religions, eat the most diverse varieties of food all of which add to the rich Indian culture. The beauty of the Indian people lies in the spirit of tolerance, give-and-take and a composition of cultures that can be compared to a garden of flowers of various colours and shades of which, while maintaining their own entity, lend harmony and beauty to the garden - India!
