A trip to India is not complete without taking a trip to Agra, the
home of the Taj Mahal and other wonderful sites. Agra is
approximately a four-hour drive southeast of New Delhi with
interesting sites along the way. Situated on the banks of the river
Yamuna, it has its beginnings around the year 1500A.D. Three
World Heritage Sites are located here; the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort
and Fatehpur Sikri. If you like what you see, click here to visit our

Taj Mahal
Agra’s Taj Mahal is one of the most photographed buildings in the
world and recently became one of the new 7 Wonders of the
World. It was build as a mausoleum to the favorite wife (Mumtaz
Mahal) of Shah Jahan and was completed in 1653A.D.
The monument, which took 22 years to build, is mostly made of
white marble inlayed with semi-precious stones.
Soon after completing the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan was put under
house arrest by his son, Aurangzeb. He spent the rest of his life at
Agra Fort gazing at the nearby Taj Mahal.

Fatehpur Sikri palace
Fatehpur Sikri
The Mughal Emperor Akbar built his
capital at Fatehpur Sikri but later had
to move it to Agra due to the lack of
water at this location. It is definitely a
beautiful site to see. The Diwan-i-Khas,
or Hall of Private Audience, is an
example of the excellent architecture at
Fatehpur Sikri. It houses a circular
platform on top of a central pillar where
Akbar held private audiences. It also is
a World Heritage Site.
Agra Fort Agra’s most dominant structure and second World Heritage Site is Agra Fort, which sometimes is referred to as the Red Fort. Although is was first built around 1565 A.D. as a sandstone fort, it was renovated in Shaj Jahan’s time as a palace with white marble.
